League One Wigan Athletic have promised impoverished Manchester City they can borrow a player to complete their substitutes’ bench in their upcoming FA Cup Fifth Round tie.
The Latics are playing the Good Samaritan after an outpouring of pity for Man City, who were unable to find enough substitutes for their Premier League encounter at Burnley.
Wigan manager Paul Cook said: “It’s always a shame when a team just can’t get the numbers together, so we’ll allow City to pick any player they want to fill their bench – apart from Will Grigg of course.
“We’d prefer if they didn’t take James Vaughan either, as he was our big-money €340,000 signing this summer.
“It’s about being good neighbours for us. What good would it be to win the FA Cup, like we did in 2013, if there wasn’t anyone who could test us.
“We can throw in a few training tops if they need them too. I just hope none of their players turn up in bare feet – that would be too much.”
