Apoel Nicosia are targeting a January transfer bid for out-of-favour Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, with Apoel officials seeing Per as a perfect fit to add some bite to their defence.
A source said: “After a disappointing Champions League campaign, Apoel want to build the core of their side around Per – with the hope he might put in a few crunching tackles during the rest of the campaign.
“They know what he’s capable of – his performance in the FA Cup final was so good it befitted a Royal Gala performance more than a football pitch.
“Apoel have conceded a lot of goals recently, and they see him as the man to stem the flow.
“He’s had a Golden career full of Delicious successes, and we’re all Brae-burning to see him in action if we can sign him.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “I don’t want to upset the applecart, but I believe his career would have to go much more pear-shaped before he plays in Cyprus.”
